The Five Components of Social and Emotional Learning
Alycia Brudner is a dedicated educator who has led classroom instruction for both middle school and high school students. Since 2015, she has served as a health and nutrition teacher at Milford High School in Milford, Massachusetts. One of Alycia Brudner’s areas of professional interest is social and emotional learning.
Lauded by organizations such as Edutopia, social and emotional learning (SEL) stresses the value of safe and positive learning that lays the groundwork for ongoing success in school and future success in both the professional and personal arenas.
The SEL framework is divided into five distinct competencies. Self-awareness involves looking inward to develop a true understanding of one's own thoughts and feelings. Social awareness involves looking outward to sympathize with other people. The SEL process also includes self-management (regulating one’s own emotions), relationship skills (establishing and maintaining healthy personal connections), and responsible decision making (constructively governing personal behavior and navigating social interactions).
